Allstate Protection Plans Finds the New Apple iPhone 13 MagSafe Cases Provide Significant Protection Against the Most Expensive Drop Damage
The silicone and leather cases helped prevent damage to the back of the phone.
Last week, Apple announced four new models in the latest iPhone 13 range. Like the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, they feature a Ceramic Shield front, glass back, and flat-edge sides in aluminum for iPhone 13 and stainless steel for 13 Pro. Apple also released new silicone and leather cases with MagSafe for the iPhone 13 series.
When put through its Breakability Drop Test, Allstate Protection Plans found that iPhone 13 and 13 Pro are comparable in durability to their iPhone 12 predecessors, which is no surprise given their similarity in construction, form factor, and materials. However, Allstate Protection Plans added an additional test for iPhone 13 and 13 Pro – also dropping iPhone 13 in the Apple silicone MagSafe case and iPhone 13 Pro in the Apple leather MagSafe case.
While cases offer another layer of protection and are highly recommended by Allstate Protection Plans, the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro Breakability test video reveals:
- Face-Down Drop Test WITHOUT CASES: When dropped six feet onto a sidewalk on its front, iPhone 13 survived one drop with only minor damage, same as iPhone 12. On its second drop, it cracked at top and bottom corners. iPhone 13 Pro cracked across the bottom after one drop, exactly same as iPhone 12 Pro.
- Back-Down Drop Test WITHOUT CASES: When dropped six feet onto a sidewalk on its back, iPhone 13 survived with virtually no damage—same as iPhone 12. After three drops, it suffered minor cracks on one of its cameras and along a corner. iPhone 13 Pro shattered after one drop, same as iPhone 12 Pro.
- iPhone 13 in Silicone Case with MagSafe Drop Tests: The silicone case made a significant difference in durability when dropped back-down: iPhone 13 survived 3 drops with only a small scratch on one camera lens. When dropped face-down, iPhone 13 cracked on its second drop, just as it did when not in a case.
- iPhone 13 Pro in Leather Case with MagSafe Drop Tests: The leather case made a significant difference in durability when dropped back down: iPhone 13 Pro survived 3 drops with no damage. performed best in our drop tests. When dropped face-down, iPhone 13 Pro cracked on its first drop, just as it did when not in a case.
“The Apple iPhone 13 series has been viewed as a product evolution rather than a revolution, and we’ve found that to be true when it comes to durability as well,” said Jason Siciliano, Allstate Protection Plan vice president of marketing and creative director. “In our first test of an Apple case with MagSafe, we found that both silicone and leather did a great job of protecting the phones when dropped on their backs, though not as much when dropped face down. With back panel repairs costing as much as $549 for iPhone 13 Pro, a case is a must.”
Introduced in 2013, Allstate Protection Plans Breakability Tests (formerly SquareTrade Breakability Tests) give consumers an independent assessment of devices' durability and how they live up to the rigors of daily life. They consider the device's physical characteristics, such as size, components, and materials that affect its repairability and performance in standardized robotic tests that simulate the most common causes of device damage.
No matter the make or model of smartphone, Allstate Protection Plans always recommends using screen protectors and phone cases, in addition to having a protection plan.
